Zuma Urged to Act on Gordhan-Hawks Saga

President Zuma says while he supports his embattled Finance Minster‚ his hands are tied when it comes to intervening between the Hawks and the minister

President Jacob Zuma says that while he supports his embattled Finance Minster‚ Pravin Gordhan, his hands are tied when it comes to intervening between the Hawks and the minister.

Helen Suzman Foundation’s Piet Olivier points out that while the president cannot interfere with specific investigations or prosecutions‚ he has plenty of power to oversee the Hawks.

According to Olivier, Zuma could use his considerable influence over the African National Congress (ANC) caucus in Parliament and indications are that the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters would only be too happy to help the ruling party to get the two-thirds majority it needs to remove Hawks head Lieutenant-General, Berning Ntlemeza.
