The Gross Inequities of Global Imbalances
Friday, March 16, 2007 – 00:00
Eldis Reporter, 16 March 2007.
In their UNDP paper, authors McKinley, T and Izurieta, A argue that the current global economic imbalances cause a grossly inequitable distribution of global resources. They explain that capital is ‘flowing uphill’ towards rich countries, in particular to the US. McKinley and Izurieta contend that the money that many middle-income countries are now investing in the US could make a major contribution to development if it were redirected to poorer countries, or even kept within these middle-income countries.
