The EU’s Footprint in the South
Eldis Aid and Debt Reporter, 2 May 2007.
In 2005, following the worldwide call to Make Poverty History, European governments promised to increase the aid and debt relief to poor countries. But just how effective is European countries aid in combating poverty?
This paper evaluates EC aid effectiveness by drawing on evidence from six countries in the period 2002-2006. The paper finds that, although some progress has been made, much more could be done to ensure that resources improve the lives of people living in poverty.
The authors take as the starting point the EC’s commitment to poverty eradication, the Millennium Development Goals and the principles of ownership, partnership, and participation.
