The Gauteng Welfare, Social Service and Development Forum (GWSSDF) regrets the absence of any reference in this year’s budget speech to the needs of our country’s social welfare system, which urgently requires attention at this time. 
 
Organisations serving vulnerable groups within our society continue to struggle to survive. Those served by these organisations include e.g. children, the elderly, those with disabilities, victims of violence, people infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, the poor and the destitute. The bulk of the services in question are being delivered by nonprofit organisations (NPOs), many of which are in dire financial straits at this time. We sincerely hope that special attention will be paid to the needs of this sector in the upcoming provincial budget announcements.
