Globalisation, Anti-Privatisation and Debt Relief

From the more moderate to the profoundly radical, South African NGOs working in the economic justice arena engage with inconsistencies in the local and global economies which perpetuate inequalities that deepen widespread poverty.

An important area for intervention is the ravages of the globalising economy on local labour. Many economic justice NGOs work closely with organised labour due to the high number of employed South Africans that live in poverty. According to the 2005 Labour Force Survey, 60% of employed South Africans earn R2,500 per month or less.

Research and advocacy characterise the main activities of these organisations who advocate for an alternative to the dominant capitalist economic model, presenting arguments for alternatives that are more redistributive.
