From NGO to BONGO: A Story of Survival
Business Day, 2 October 2006.
Andrew Miller, CEO of Project Literacy, tells Business Day that the NGO used to receive millions in donor funding prior to 1994, but in 1994 donors started funding the South African government rather than NGOs. This change in donor funding resulted in Project Literacy’s donor funding dropping to R5061 by the year 1998. Since then, Project Literacy has become more business-like and has earned the NGO the label "bongo" or business-oriented NGO. Now only 20% of the organisation's income is provided by donors — a vast change from its earlier complete reliance on donor-funding.
