EISA Expresses Confidence in IEC

EISA commends the Independent Electoral Commission for taking action after ballot papers were stolen in Soweto

The Electoral Institute of Southern Africa (EISA) has commended the Independent Electoral Commission for taking action after ballot papers were stolen in Soweto.

Boxes containing about 2 000 ballot papers for Wednesday’s local elections were taken from a delivery van in Dobsonville last Thursday.

EISA’s Dennis Kadima says this promotes confidence, adding that, “I think it’s good when there is a problem and we see an action. I think that will be good for all candidates who are involved and all parties who are involved in the electoral process and it may also create a degree of trust in the process.”

Meanwhile more than 800 000 people qualifying for special votes will vote from 1-2 August 2016 as the 2016 local government elections get under way.
