– A guide for South African non-governmental organisations and community-based organisations

BY KATHY COOK

Summary

This manual is a comprehensive guide that takes the reader step-by-step through the proposal writing and fundraising process. Written in a question-and-answer, user-friendly style by an experienced international donor, it offers guidance to those seeking information and insights into the funding world. The manual is ideal for non-governmental organisations, community-based groups and income-generating projects, from those with no formal training in proposal writing or fundraising, to those who would like to sharpen their existing skills.

Complete with samples taken from real proposals, worksheets, writing tips and a glossary of funding terms, the manual contains a range of activities for organisations to develop the necessary skills to reach their fundraising goals. It explains not only how to write a successful proposal and design a fundraising strategy, but also how to interact with donors while building an organisation at the same time.

The manual shows how to:

  • Organise and gather information for the proposal
  • Write each section of a proposal
  • Compile a budget
  • Create a donor database
  • Submit a proposal to donors
  • Locate and build relationships with donors
  • Develop a fundraising strategy
  • Train others in proposal writing and fundraising
  • Conduct an evaluation
  • De-mystify fundraising concepts within an organisation
  • Apply participatory approaches to proposal writing and fundraising activities
  • Improve business writing skills
  • Utilise the knowledge of organisational members with limited formal education

About the author and the South Coast Foundation

Kathy Cook is the founding director of South Coast Foundation, an American foundation that has supported South African non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community-based organisations (CBOs) since 1988. The foundation’s special area of support has been to women’s groups, especially in the rural areas, community development projects, organisations representing people with disabilities, community health centres and income-generating projects. Often South Coast Foundation has been the first international donor to provide funding to the organisations it supports.

The foundation has been based Cape Town since 1994. Since the foundation’s inception, Ms. Cook has had the opportunity to review hundreds of South African proposals, from simple one page hand-written letters to highly sophisticated proposals. Through her work with South Coast Foundation, she has gained experience and insight into the challenges facing organisations, in particular those without previous fundraising experience.
