Cyber crime implies data loss; damage to company and/or organization reputation; direct financial losses; negative effect to productivity and profit. The recent example was Johannesburg’s City Power, which fell victim to a ransomware attack in July.  Despite all these warnings and experiences, South African businesses seem to be flipping coins on what steps they should take or where they stand in facing this phenomenon.  Suffering downtime from  a cyberattack can have far-reaching consequences for organisations in the public and private sectors.
 
It is high time that organizations and corporations put comprehensive security controls in preventing cyber threats, as well as empowering employees with ongoing cybersecurity awareness training.  The combination of these elements provide protection before a cyberattack, minimises opportunities for human error to undermine security efforts, and reduces the time needed to recover while minimising data and productivity losses in the wake of a successful attack.
