Arrests After New Student Protests, Barricades at Wits

Four Wits University students were arrested on Monday for disobeying a court order that prohibits them from disrupting the academic programme.

Wits was awarded the interdict by the Johannesburg High Court in April last year during the #FeesMustFall protests.

On Monday, about 150 students protested at Wits’ Parktown campus, demanding better accommodation. They stormed a lecture room, disrupting teaching, and attempted to block the entrances to the campus.

Wits spokesman Shirona Patel said that, after receiving a memorandum of demands from students, the university’s senior managers met representatives of the Education Students’ Council on Monday.
