11m South Africans Go Hungry Daily

Although a third of South Africa’s food ends up in landfill sites, about 11 million people in the country go hungry daily, according to Food Bank SA

Food Bank South Africa says although a third of South Africa’s food ends up in landfill sites, about 11 million people in the country go hungry daily.

As World Hunger Day is commemorated on Thursday, 28 May 2015, the Food Bank has put out a challenge to citizens to fast to experience the brutality of hunger.

Fund manager, Kate Hamilton, explains, “What we are trying to do through World Hunger Day is to create an awareness of the reach and the impact of hunger. What we are asking people to do this year is to register to take part in a 12-hour fast and I know it’s a bit strange asking people not to eat to create awareness around hunger, but what we trying to do is, we trying to get people to understand what the real impact is, what is it like to go a day without eating.”
