Just when you thought that discussions about human rights are serious business, now there is a game which demonstrates it can be serious fun.

Vantagepoint is an interactive and experiential business board game developed by the Human Rights and Business Project South Africa in collaboration with Strategic Productivity Ltd. The game is designed to provide insight into human rights dilemmas commonly encountered in business – all in a relaxed, fun atmosphere.

According to Joan Osterloh of Strategic Productivity Ltd., “Players have to deal with the kind of business challenges and dilemmas that managers face in their normal day-to-day operations – acquire sales orders, pay invoices, attract staff, deal with governments, [and] interact with the local community….” Participants choose the role that they would like to play and are faced with the costs and benefits arising from their business decisions, including whether or not to make socially and environmentally responsible choices.

The game has been developed to emphasize the role of corporations in promoting and securing human rights in a corporate context. According to Tagbo Agbazue of the African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC), “The dilemmas that the player has to react upon in the game are based on the Human Rights Compliance Assessment South Africa (HRCA-SA), a diagnostic tool which aids businesses in improving their policies, practices, and performance on human rights within their sphere of influence.” Just like the HRCA-SA, the business game is anchored on normative legal frameworks, including the South African regulatory environment, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as other United Nations and ILO conventions.

Vantagepoint has been developed by entrepreneurs who have both made and lost millions, happily surviving both. Dave Fawcett, Joan Osterloh and Mark Williams collectively have more than 50 years of business experience between them, covering a range of sectors. The game was developed with financial support from the ASN Bank in the Netherlands and Shell SA (Pty) Ltd.
