The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) reports that from 1997 to 2002, the number of reported HIV/AIDS related deaths rose from 320,000 to 500,000 indicating an increase of 57% — most of the victims were babies and young adults. At the same time, quoting a Kayelitsha Clinic case study, the TAC reports that over a three year period, four out of five people are alive from a group of adults and children numbering 2,000 who have been receiving antiretroviral treatment.
