The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) reports that from 1997 to 2002, the number of reported HIV/AIDS related deaths rose from 320,000 to 500,000 indicating an increase of 57% — most of the victims were babies and young adults. At the same time, quoting a Kayelitsha Clinic case study, the TAC reports that over a three year period, four out of five people are alive from a group of adults and children numbering 2,000 who have been receiving antiretroviral treatment. Against this backdrop, the TAC is calling for government to provide antiretroviral treatment to 200,000 people by the beginning of 2006.To read the briefing document supporting this demand, click here.
