Transgender Issues in the Spotlight at AIDS Conference

Various NPOs have added their voices calling for the inclusion of minority groups in the fight against HIV/AIDS

Various nonprofits organisations have added their voices calling for the inclusion of minority groups in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Director of the social, health and empowerment part of the African Trans Women, Leigh Ann van der Merwe, says transgender women continue to be stigmatised by some health workers.

Van der Merwe states that, “Even in my context of organising in the Eastern Cape, transwomen are faced with a lot of impediments in terms of accessing care, one particular example that comes into my mind is about when transwomen have a document that does not reflect their chosen name and gender identity and they have to access ARVs [antiretroviral drugs].”
