Rise Up, a leader in the global movement for gender equity, is delighted to announce the launch of a new initiative in South Africa in partnership with Cummins Inc., called the Gender Equity Initiative (GEI), in order to advance education, opportunity, social justice, and gender equity in South Africa.
Rise Up will select 20 visionary civil society and non-profit leaders from Gauteng Province and Durban to participate in a week-long Advocacy and Leadership Accelerator workshop in February 2020 to build their advocacy capacity, strengthen leadership skills, and develop a holistic understanding of the issues affecting women and girls in their communities. Following the Advocacy and Leadership Accelerator, Rise Up leaders will have the opportunity to apply for competitive seed funding to launch their strategies to advance gender equity and justice across Gauteng Province and Durban, South Africa.
In South Africa, women and girls face significant obstacles in reaching their full potential and accessing education, health, employment, economic opportunities, and leadership in the public and private sector. Despite various national polices that aim to promote gender equality, many health, economic, and social inequities remain. Across South Africa, adolescent girls and women experience an extremely high rate of gender-based and sexual violence, which contributes to the high prevalence of HIV amongst girls and women – adolescent girls have a HIV prevalence rate 8 times higher than their male peers and approximately 2,000 young women are newly infected every week according to NACOSA.
Rise Up will help these 20 leaders from Gauteng Province and Durban continue to empower women and girls to realize their own potential and speak out as leaders themselves in their communities and country. Rise Up and our allies will amplify the voices of women and girls to create a more just and equitable world.
“We are deeply honored to partner with Cummins to advance gender equality globally. Rise Up will leverage this new partnership to invest in the vision of girls and women leaders to transform their own lives, families, and countries.” – Denise Dunning, Rise Up’s Founder and Executive Director
