.Shine Literacy is a non-profit organisation that seeks to improve literacy outcomes for young children from low-income communities in South Africa. Working in partnership with teachers, volunteers and parents, our evidence-based programmes provide effective and sustained support to children as they learn to read and write, helping to foster a life-long love of books and learning.

Shine Literacy hereby invites applications from two suitably qualified candidates to be appointed as Trainers for a period of One (1) Year with a start date of 2022.

Role:Shine Creating a Culture of Reading Trainers

Shine needs two experienced trainers, Afrikaans/English and isiXhosa/English, to work on a contract basis for the 2022 academic year. Trainers will be responsible for the development and facilitation of face to face and online training. 

Job Responsibilities and Role:

  • Facilitate training in Afrikaans/isiXhosa and English
  • Supervise youth as a Youth 4 Literacy Coordinator
  • Develop and facilitate online training modules for teachers, parents/caregivers and youth
  • Work with the Shine Team to deliver quality training
  • Engage, analyse and adapt training content to suit training needs
  • Attend meetings in preparation for planning and implementation at Shine Head Office in Zonnebloem Estate

Knowledge and Skills:

  • A strong understanding of the CAPS Primary School Curriculum
  • Proficiency in Afrikaans and English or isiXhosa and English
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Forms and Google Drive is essential
  • Ability to think creatively and solve problems
  • Ability to adapt to changing organisational needs, conditions, and work responsibilities as required.
  • Strong communication skills - listening skills & ability to adapt communication to different audiences
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Ability to use online platforms such as Zoom or Google Teams for training

Qualifications and Exprience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education
  • 4 years’ experience in education sector
  • Driver’s license and personal vehicle is essential
  • Experience in supporting teaching and literacy or youth development programmes would be advantageous
  • Experienced trainer (for youth and/or adults) advantageous
