Chemonics International, an international development firm, seeks a Communications Specialist for the USAID/Combating Wildlife Crime in Southern Africa Activity. This four-year program aims to support the shared commitments of the U.S. Government (USG), the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), member states, private sector partners, and civil society to dramatically decrease wildlife crime across Southern Africa. The purpose of the Activity is to coordinate learning and support strategic regional activities to address wildlife crime challenges. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. This position will be based in Pretoria, South Africa.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide support across the project and identify channels for communicating key messages, especially in social media
  • Collate stories and data for use in high-impact internal and external communications to “tell the story” about combating wildlife crime
  • Work with the technical team, including the monitoring and evaluation team, to develop a quarterly newsletter and updates on partner activity progress, standard indicators, and new tools
  • Support the media engagement strategy and communication efforts and mentor a cadre of local media professionals
  • Oversee the design and production of print and audio-visual media, including brochures, publications, etc.
  • Work with consortium partners on communications and understanding and promoting lessons learned through the conceptualization and development of online learning and sharing platforms
  • Oversee all contract-related communications, ensure compliance with USAID communications and branding requirements, and integrate best practices and priorities of regional governments, counterparts, USAID, and Chemonics into project efforts
  • Carry out public relations related activities to promote the good image of the project through the conceptualization of events and campaigns, the planning and organization of events and campaigns, as well as the implementation and evaluation of these activities;
  • Support the compilation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports produced by the program

 Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in communications or a related field
  • Experience in a communications role on a regional natural resource management project in southern Africa is a key attribute
  • Three to five years of outreach experience in wildlife and natural resource management preferred
  • Experience crafting narrative and video materials, with proven skills in planning and organizing events
  • Demonstrated understanding of outreach through social media
  • Knowledge of USAID branding and marking and communication reporting requirements desired
  • Willingness to travel frequently within southern Africa
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity, with strong interpersonal skills
  • English language proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing
