NGOs Face Funding Cut Next Year

The Community Chest calls for an emergency meeting with its beneficiaries to warn them of an expected R7 million cut in grants next year

The Community Chest, a NGO advancing, empowering and caring for vulnerable communities, has called for an emergency meeting with its beneficiaries to warn them of an expected R7 million cut in grants next year.

Community Chest CEO, Amelia Jones, says the organisation provides funding to 487 recipients, with grants ranging from R18 000 to R1 million a year. Jones says they paid R16 million to beneficiaries, adding that they expects this figure to drop to R9 million in the 2011/12 financial year.

In the same vein, Helderberg Society for the Aged financial manager, Danie Digue, states that without Community Chest funding the poor would suffer most. Digue, whose organisation runs two old age homes, says that 50 percent of residents are unable to pay.
