Under the banner of the Alexandra Vukuzenzele Crisis Committee, an affiliate of the Anti-Privatisation Forum, more than 60 families from Alexandra Township are occupying half-built council houses in protest against poor service delivery.
Frieda Dlamini, a member of the Alexandra Vukuzenzele Crisis Committee, explains that residents decided to occupy the houses after the Gauteng Department of Housing failed to respond to their grievances. Dlamini maintains that most of the demonstrators have been on the housing waiting lists since 1996.
The protest follows similar protests across the country where people have demonstrated their frustrated with the slow pace of service delivery.
