Nations Urged to Prioritise Food Security, Nutrition

Three Rome-based UN agencies have called for food security and nutrition to be placed at the core of the international agenda for African development

Three Rome-based United Nations (UN) agencies have called for food security and nutrition to be placed at the core of the international agenda for African development.

Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) director-general, Jose Graziano da Silva, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) president, Kanayo Nwanze, and World Food Programme executive director, Ertharin Cousin, say special attention should be given to small-holder farmers in Africa to help them improve global food security.

They say efforts should be aimed at empowering rural women, address gender inequalities and enable them transform their lives as well as those of their families and communities.
