The Legal Resources Centre (LRC) has written to the state attorney protesting the ill treatment of the Richtersveld community by the state after it made deals with De Beers.
The Richtersveld community is to set to take court action which seeks to bring into the open, details of a "secret" deal struck by diamond mining giant De Beers, the Department of Minerals and Energy and state mining group Alexkor. The deal entailed the merging of De Beer's Namaqualand Mines with those of Alexkor to form a mining entity.
The Richtersveld community seeks to stop the completion of the agreement between De Beers and Alexkor, pending the finalisation of its land claim by the Land Claims Court, following an order by the Constitutional Court in their favour, for restitution of land and minerals.
