Killing of Lesbian a ‘Hate Crime’ – HRW

HRW declares the brutal rape and murder of LGBTI activist who was stabbed and stoned to death, a hate crime

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has declared the brutal rape and murder of Noxolo Nogwaza, a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) activist who was stabbed and stoned to death in Kwa-Thema township, east of Johannesburg, a hate crime.

In 2008, lesbian activist, Eudy Simelane, was raped and murdered and a gay man narrowly escaped with his life after being attacked by a mob there in 2010.

KwaThema GLBT rights activist, Ntsupe, says that “Eudy’s case was not recognised as a hate crime against a lesbian and the same is not done in the cases of many other people who have been raped … or murdered on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity [or] expression in South Africa.”
