In a bid to speed up land reform in South Africa, the Department of Land Affairs (DLA) could effect new legislation aimed at giving the state first option to buy properties that are up for sale.
The move has been announced by the DLA's Glenn Thomas, during his address to the parliamentary portfolio committee on land affairs on the current legislation providing for certain land for settlement and possible changes to it.
According to Thomas, the provision of first option for the state would apply to all sales, whether in cities, towns or rural areas.
