ICASA Notes 'Significance' of MTN Nigeria Fine

MTN's US$5.2-billion fine shows the importance of complying with regulation, argues ICASA

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) says MTN's US$5.2-billion fine shows the importance of complying with regulation.

This follows MTN’s announced that it has been fined US$5.2 billion by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) after failing to disconnect five-million unregistered SIM cards in the country.

“ICASA is unable to comment on the latest developments regarding MTN in another jurisdiction except to note that such developments are significant in that they illustrate the importance of taking compliance to all relevant legislation seriously,” says ICASA.
