The State of ICTs in the South African NGO Sector 2009 survey was conducted in 2009 by World Wide Worx, on behalf of the Southern African NGO Network (SANGONeT). Decision-makers at 800 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) spread across the country and representing organisations of all sizes and interest groups were interviewed.

By the time the 2009 SANGONeT "ICTs for Civil Society" Conference, held in Johannesburg and Cape Town, ended at the River Club in Observatory on 21 October 2009, there were more non-profits excited about the potential uses of social media in their work than when we began.

The relevance of social media for South African NGOs was the focus of the 5th Annual SANGONeT “ICTs for Civil Society” Conference. Held for the first time in two parts - from 15-16 October in Johannesburg and 20-21 October 2009 in Cape Town - the conference attracted more than 250 participants.

This research reports looks at various aspects that can bring about an impact on development using the appropriate application of ICT to accelerate or even jumpstart progress. ICTs on their own are not a panacea for economic problems but once properly harnessed and used can easily enhance developmental efforts.

The four winners of the 2009 NGO Web Awards were announced at the NetTuesday meet up in Cape Town last night. The three winners in the category best use of social web were Food and Trees for Africa, South African History Online and Media and Training Centre for Health, while Cell-Life won the best use of mobile technology category.

Social media, web 2.0 and the mobile web are terms that have gained increased visibility in South Africa and across the world. But what do they mean for non-governmental organisations working for social change in resource poor communities? Why should NGOs care about technology when they are finding it hard enough to serve their constituencies and have an impact?

The power of social media is transforming the way in which non-profits accomplish their missions. Although some local NGOs have started to experiment with social media applications, the uptake is still limited and in most cases not part of a broader strategic approach. However, traditional NGO activities such as fundraising and advocacy will directly benefit from the availability of a wide range of affordable online services and applications.

It is hard enough for girls and women to deal with harassment and abuse in our every day physical spaces – of work, school, home - but what about when it happens in virtual spaces? How do we control what happens in cyberspace? Girls’Net recognises these challenges and has launched the "Keep your chats exactly that!" campaign to address violence against girls in online spaces.

Aadila Molale reports on the first round of sector engagements on the Prodder / GuideStar International NGO Directory Pilot Project. The project is expected to produce a feasibility study on the use of GuideStar as a back-end solution for the Prodder NGO Directory and the viability of Prodder / GuideStar International partnership going forward.
