Bloggers Protest the Blocking of Websites

According to Peter Adamu, a sizeable group of people calling themselves Zambian bloggers protested against the blocking of two critical website - Zambian Watchdog and Zambia Report - from domestic access in the country.

Adamu reports that the country’s ruling Patriotic Front (PF) government has hired Chinese and Russian squads to block websites writing on events in Zambia and exposing corruption of President Michael Sata and his family.

Free Websites for Small Businesses

The Woza Online initiative has successfully helped 11 200 South African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) set up websites easily and for free, two months after it was launched.

This was announced at a Woza Online roadshow in Durban, showing businesses in the city that having an online presence can expand their customer base.

ICANN Approves New Web Suffixes

A global body that charts the course of the Internet, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), has voted to allow the creation of new website domain suffixes by private companies, enabling major firms to replace “.com” with their own brand.

The ICANN voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposal at a meeting in Singapore despite fears that opening up new suffixes could cause some confusion.

NGOs Lack Capacity to Fight Cyber Attacks

Very few NGOs, especially charities, have the resources to defend themselves from cyber attacks, according to Toby Nicholas, a technical expert at Survival International.

Nicholas, whose comment follows the attack of a human rights organisation focusing on indigenous tribal people's website, is of the view that, “The attack made it impossible to keep our main website running, and the attackers have also targeted our online shop, which had to briefly go offline.”

South African NGO Websites on the Internet

In the short-staffed multi-tasking world of the NGO, little attention is paid to the website. The average South African NGO website is an electronic version of the organisation’s promotional leaflets. A fact correlating closely with contemporary non-profit thinking on the purpose of websites. SANGONeT’s current poll asks NGOs what their websites are used for and marketing(!!!) comes out tops.
