​Africa Experiences Sluggish Economic Growth

The African continent has continued experiencing sluggish economic growth despite having huge resources compared to European counties.
 
Africa's growth continued to increase from 3.7 percent in 2013 to 3.9 percent in 2014, a performance that is underpinned by improved macro-economic management, diversified trade and investment ties with emerging economies, among other factors.
 
Africa's social development indicators, however, reveal the often observed economic performance which includes high unemployment and poverty co-existing with robust growth.
 

Unemployment to Rise in 2017 – ILO

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) says South Africa’s unemployment rate is expected to rise by 300 000 people by next year.
 
In its World Employment Social Outlook report, the ILO warned that if there is no change in policy responses to the global economic slowdown, about 3.4 million more people would be without jobs by 2017.
 
It is estimated that 5.3 million people (25.5 percent) in South Africa will be unemployed this year, and 5.4 million people (25.7 percent) in 2017. Last year 5.1 million people were unemployed.
 

Unemployment Remains the Biggest Risk

Ubiquity Reputation Strategist, Kaveer Beharee, says unemployment remains the biggest risk perceived in South Africa.

Beharee's comments come as the country hopes to convince international investors that South Africa remains an attractive investment destination.

This week will see the sitting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and interested stakeholders are readying themselves for Davos.

Meanwhile, more than 80 South African businesses, government and non-governmental organisation leaders will attend the WEF.

Over 50 Percent of Youths Jobless

While university students fight for their rights, just over 50 percent of the country's youth are unemployed.

The Child Gauge 2015 report, released by the Children's Institute at the University of Cape Town, states that 51 percent of those aged between 20 and 24 are not employed or studying, while 21 percent are employed, 16 percent are still completing school and 12 percent are studying or training.

Lack of Opportunities Blamed for Unemployment

Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, says while unemployment in South Africa is exacerbated by a lack of appropriate skills‚ it is also compounded by the shortage of suitable post-school education opportunities.
 
Speaking on the occasion of the release of the government’s Development Indicators 2014 report, Radebe pointed out that the indicators reflect that one in four working age adults actively seeking employment remained unemployed during the period under review.
 

SA Urged to Create Enough Jobs

The World Bank says millions of young South Africa are jobless and searching for work but they could not be employed because they lacked the requisite skills for the modern day work environment.

The bank argues that, “Without enough jobs being created, South Africa is left with many of its unskilled and young facing the prospect of unemployment.”

The World Bank lead economist for South Africa, Catriona Purfield, adds that the unemployment rate is the highest in all the middle income countries at 25.4 percent, or a third if you include discouraged workers.

Minimum Wages Must be Living Wages: Workers Support Families

The Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (PACSA) Minimum Food Basket in March 2015 for a family of four members increased from R2 155.62 to R2 170.04, a R14.42 or 0.67 percent month-on-month increase. This increase in the cost of a basket of food has to be considered against the increasing price trends in the International Commodity prices for staple foods and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) food month-on-month increases (up for the third month since January) and importantly against the backdrop of the urgent debate on minimum wages.

Learning Cape Initiative: Relationship Manager

The Learning Cape Initiative is a nonprofit organisation which serves as a social development agency in the field of Lifelong Learning. The organisation is currently working on a project whereby it trains and places unemployed people.

The LCI seeks to appoint a Relationship Manager to secure job placements for unemployed youth and source clients for commercial training.
