Chile Announces Mandela Scholarships

President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, proposes to her government to avail 50 scholarships to students in South Africa and other African countries to pursue their master's degrees at a top university in Chile.

Bachelet states that the awarding of the scholarships would be done in honour of the late President Nelson Mandela.

She adds that ‘Tata’, who affectionately became known by his clan name Madiba, was her role model growing up.

The African Leaders of Tomorrow (ALT) Scholarship Programme commemorates late Nelson Mandela’s commitment to social justice and equity by supporting young African professionals to become leaders in public policy and administration.

The ALT Scholarship Programme will grant scholarships to young African women and men to pursue a Master’s degree in public administration, public policy or public finance in Canada.

Swazi Students Demand Democracy

Students in Swaziland demanding democracy and scholarships have marched to Mbabane against the country’s decision to cut spending on tuition subsidies and school supplies.

At one point, president of the Swaziland National Union of Students, Maxwell Dlamini, tried to address the crowd but police immediately moved toward, apparently to arrest him, but other students gathered to prevent him being taken away.

Swazi Activists May Lose Scholarships

Students in Swaziland will have their scholarships revoked if they engage in political activity, if the Swazi Government has its way.

According to new rules for students presently being drafted, the Scholarship Selection Board can terminate a scholarship 'when a student is a member, supports or furthers the activities of a banned entity.
