Demography and Populations Studies: Pre-Doctoral Internships

The Demography and Populations Studies (DPS) Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand is an academic programme at Honours-Masters and PhD level, with a strong population and reproductive health research orientation, that involves active regional and international academic partnerships, is networked effectively nationally and regionally, and responds to critical population, health and social issues confronting South and sub-Saharan Africa.

Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation: Study Counsellor

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation (DTHF) is a registered nonprofit organisation focused on the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of HIV and related infections in Southern Africa. 

DTHF seeks to appoint an HCT Study Counsellor for its Mobile HIV Testing Unit (Tutu Tester).

This is a five-month contract position.

Responsibilities:

South to South: Clinical Programme Director

Stellenbosch University - South to South Programme for Comprehensive Family HIV Care and Treatment (S2S) South to South (S2S) is a programme in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University near Cape Town, South Africa. S2S was established in 2006 to provide paediatric expertise to multidisciplinary teams in Africa caring for children in ARV programmes. S2S now supports the South African national Department of Health to improve HIV/TB health services for mothers, infants, children and adolescents.

Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation: Data Officer

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation’s (DTHF) mission is the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of HIV and related infections. The DTHF works in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Government (PGWC) on services strengthening initiatives. The 'Family Planning into HIV Care and Treatment Services Project' (FPI) is one of those projects.

The DTHF seeks to appoint a Data Officer, based in Cape Town at the UCT Medical School, Anzio Road.

This is a fixed term, 12 month contract position.

CSPRI: Materials Development Consultant

The Civil Society Prison Reform Initiative (CSPRI), established in 2003, is a research and advocacy project focussing on prisons and places of confinement in the African region, with the aim of furthering constitutional and human rights imperatives within these settings.

CSPRI seeks to appoint a Materials Development Consultant, based in Cape Town.

Afrobarometer: Web Content Manager

The Afrobarometer is an independent, non-partisan research project that measures the social, political and economic atmosphere in Africa through public attitude surveys.  The Afrobarometer Network comprises more than 35 partner organizations that conduct field research, and analyse and publicize results to media and government and non-government policy makers, as well as ordinary citizens.

Project 90 by 2030: Treasurer

Project 90 by 2030 is a registered nonprofit organisation established in 2007. The project exists to challenge South Africans to change their lifestyles and the way they relate to the environment significantly. The project envisions a world that sustains humanity, where people are valued and earth systems are preserved. Project 90 by 2030's aim is to inspire and bring about significant, positive change in the way we, as humans, engage with earth systems and each other.
 

Rising CO2 Threat to Nutrient Levels in Crops

Researchers have warned that rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may cut the nutritional quality of some of the world's most important food crops.

They say the amounts of two important nutrients, zinc and iron, were found to be lower in wheat, rice, soybeans and field peas grown in open-air fields where the scientists created CO2 concentrations at the level they forecast for Earth by roughly 2050, about 550 parts per million.

Research Highlights Progress in HIV Prevention

United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), among others, has released research studies which provide evidence that safe, high quality voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) services performed by trained healthcare professionals in low resource settings can be implemented and sustained at scale and have the potential to significantly prevent new HIV infections in adolescent and adult men.
