Petition the President: Stop the Secrecy Bill!

Parliament has passed the Secrecy Bill (the Protection of State Information Bill) and now President Zuma must apply his mind in considering signing it into law.

The Right2Know Campaign calls on all freedom-loving South Africans and democrats across the world to contact President Zuma and appeal to him to stop the Secrecy Act and either return the Bill to Parliament for redrafting, or send it directly to the Constitutional Court for review.

Right2Know Campaign: National Coordinator

The Right2Know (R2K) Campaign is an umbrella group of organisations and activists mobilising and advocating for access to information and against secrecy in government and the private sector. R2K is best known for leading the civil society campaign on the Secrecy Bill, but its work has expanded to tackle broader issues relating to freedom of expression, media freedom and diversity and the free flow of information.

R2K seeks to appoint a new National Coordinator, based in Cape Town.

Responsibilities:

Endorse the Journalist's Declaration on the Protection of State Information Bill

We hear a lot from government, civil society and the editors forum about various threats to media freedom in South Africa. But until now the voice of working journalists has been relatively silent. Now a few concerned journalists are getting organised and have prepared a Declaration on the Protection of State Information Bill.

They are calling on all journalists working in the community, public and commercial media to add their names to the statement.

Here is the Declaration:
