NGO Provides Aid for Children

As a senior at Penn, 1999 College graduate, Jacob Lief, could not imagine that he would impact the lives of thousands of children in South Africa.
 
Today, Lief is the chief executive officer and co-founder of the Ubuntu Education Fund, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to providing for vulnerable children in South Africa.
 
16 years later, the Ubuntu Education Fund grew to become a leader among NGOs, and has assisted more than 2 000 children and their families.
 

500 NGOs Receive PEPFAR Support

More than 500 community and faith-based organisations (FBOs) in Zambia last year received support from the United States’ Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Small Grants Programme to implement HIV and AIDS prevention programmes and support for orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs).

Acting PEPFAR country coordinator, Tamu Daniel, points out that that the agency’s small grants programme gives community-based organisations (CBOs) the opportunity to grow and thrive.

African Solutions to African Problems: Executive Director

African Solutions to African Problems (ASAP) supports grassroots organisations to care for orphans and vulnerable children in rural South Africa. ASAP develops and supports Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) of women providing care for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) affected by HIV/AIDS in rural villages in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. These communities are in isolated, deeply rural, communities, which have been overwhelmed by the catastrophic effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

MMEWR Donates to Vulnerable Kids

Botswana’s Department of Mines under the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources (MMEWR) has donated toiletries to Bana Ba Letsatsi Rehabilitation Centre in Maun.

Speaking during the donation, Hossia Chimbombi, who is a principal engineer, said the donation will help those in need, adding that they heard Bana Ba Letsatsi's cry for help and they decided to help by coming together as employees and contributing.

Fundraising to Create Shelter for OVC

RA1SE - ONE for Good Causes will this year - along with a number of volunteers - will be raising funds for its project in Zambia, in partnership with Lusaka’s Youth Organisation for Orphans.

The project entails the construction and finishing of three houses and an administration block, a water reservoir and a farm and also intends to make the home as self-sustainable as possible, while providing opportunities for the orphans to learn new skills.

Friends In Ireland: Early Childhood Development Officer

Friends in Ireland (FII), is an Irish NGO and South African Trust working in the Eastern Cape (EC) and KwaZulu Natal (KZN) provinces of South Africa assisting communities care and support Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) through Community-Development structures. With offices in Kokstad (KZN), FII have established CBO which operate 10 projects (3 in the Maluti area bordering on Lesotho, 2 in Bizana and 1 in each of Lusikisiki, Flagstaff and Kokstad). At these centres FII supports 4 Early Childhood Development Facilities (ECD), with a 5th ECD to open in 2013.
