Mandela Foundation Launches Mobile App

The Nelson Mandela Foundation have launched an inspiration app that contains thousands of quotes from former President Mandela.

The organisation points out that, “The Nelson Mandela Foundation has developed and launched the authorised Nelson Mandela Quotations app to bring Madiba’s words to the palm of your hand.”

The quotes were also drawn from Mandela’s official papers, speeches, recorded interviews, letters, diary extracts and impromptu remarks over a period of 63 years.

SABC Donates Archive Footage to Mandela Foundation

As the world commemorates the first anniversary of former president Nelson Mandela’s passing today, 5 December 2014, the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) hosts an exhibition in memory on the Icon.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has handed over a video and audio material including highlights of Mandela’s life and funeral coverage from the corporation’s television, radio and digital platforms to the foundation.

The public broadcaster ran a 10 day special broadcast across the different platforms after Mandela’s death.

Remembering Mandela Tribute Expo Opens

An exhibition of former president Nelson Mandela’s life has opened almost a year after the icon’s death.

Tributes to Mandela’s family from the time he fell ill in 2013 and messages of condolence are on display at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton, Johannesburg.

Nelson Mandela Foundation Research and Archive director, Verne Harris states that, “…When Madiba was in hospital last year [2014], people came in their thousands and left cards, even gifts along the wall of the hospital. We made a selection of those material."

Chile Announces Mandela Scholarships

President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, proposes to her government to avail 50 scholarships to students in South Africa and other African countries to pursue their master's degrees at a top university in Chile.

Bachelet states that the awarding of the scholarships would be done in honour of the late President Nelson Mandela.

She adds that ‘Tata’, who affectionately became known by his clan name Madiba, was her role model growing up.

South Africans Should Continue Mandela's Work

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) states that South Africans could best remember former president Nelson Mandela by working to continue his life's work.  

LHR believes Nelson Mandela's renowned legacy is what has kept civil society's eye focused on human rights in South Africa and across the continent.

LHR considers the international peace icon as a role model who shared many of his aspirations of upholding the rule of law and championing the rights of those who did not have the voice to fight for themselves.

Madiba’s Passing Will Not Affect Race Relations - SAIRR

The South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) believes that the death of former president Nelson Mandela will not affect race relations in South Africa.

SAIRR’s head of research, Lerato Moloi, notes that South Africans have got along with one another largely peacefully for years without Nelson Mandela having been active in the political sphere.

“… [Nelson] Mandela’s passing may be cause for many to reflect on the remarkably peaceful and swift racial integration of many parts of society, including schools, suburbs, universities, and workplaces,” states Moloi.

UN Pays Tribute to President Mandela

The United Nations (UN) secretary-general, Ban Ki-Moon, has described former president, Nelson Mandela as ‘a giant for justice’ whose ‘selfless struggle for human dignity, equality and freedom’ inspired many people around the world.

Ban told reporters soon after Mandela’s death was announced by President Jacob Zuma that, "No one did more in our time to advance the values and aspirations of the United Nations."

Nelson Mandela Children's Fund: Specialist Advisor – Capital Campaigns

The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (NMCF) strives to change the way society treats its children and youth. The Fund has embarked on a strategic framework for the period 2010 to 2015, reflecting a new trajectory on its journey to ‘change the way society treats its children and youth. This framework intends to give voice and dignity to the African child by building a rights-based movement.

NMCF seeks to appoint an experienced and knowledgeable Specialist Advisor on Capital Campaigns, based in Johannesburg.

This is an eighteen-month contract position.

Mandela School of Technology Launched

Government has launched the Mandela School of Technology at former president Nelson Mandela's birthplace in Mvezo village in the Eastern Cape.

At a ceremony attended by Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshega, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, and Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, the school was launched to be built as soon as possible.

The Mandela School of Technology, with a capacity of 700 students, will not only be for the Mvezo community but for other surrounding communities.
