The new ministry of small business development is aimed at achieving objectives of the National Development Plan (NDP), among others job creation, expanded black ownership and transformation.

The ministry is backed up by the latest national budget that outlines numerous plans to stimulate development of the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector.

NDP Implementation to be Accelerated

The government intends to accelerate the implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP) in a bid to unlock the country's growth potential.

According to Communications Minister, Faith Muthambi, the government is alive to the growth challenges that the country faces, following a Cabinet meeting.

“Government is committed to improving the regulatory environment, reducing skills shortages and accelerating its infrastructure investment programme as part of removing obstacles that are constraining growth,” she explains.

Govt is Implementing NDP - Radebe

Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation and chairperson of the National Planning Commission, Jeff Radebe, has launched the National Development Plan (NDP) Communications Strategy and the unveiling of NDP 2030 Brand Identity.

Radebe says the unveiling of NDP 2030 Brand identity will help encourage people to identify with programme.

He is encouraging South Africans to use the new brand identity to strive towards the NDP's goals to reduce inequality and eradicate poverty by 2030.

NDP Not Focused, Says SAIRR

The South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) says the National Development Plan (NDP) tries to do too much and its costly ambitions are not discussed.

In its July edition of its monthly magazine Fast Facts, the SAIRR points out that, “It [NDP] reads as if various government departments have provided wish-lists without much attempt to pull them all together.”

The organisation argues that there is no chapter in the 500-page document discussing how all of this would be paid for.

The National Development Plan Can Improve Policing in South Africa

A hard-hitting television presenter recently asked the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, if he would resign given the deterioration of policing in recent years. This took place during a popular television programme called ‘The Big Debate’ screened on one of South Africa’s most watched television channels, SABC 2, on 14 April 2013.

Call for NPOs to Embrace Good Governance

The Corporate Governance Research Institute has described sustainability as a ‘good component’ of good governance.

Speaking about corporate governance and compliance by nonprofit organisations (NPOs) at the National Lotteries Board Indaba and Inaugural Awards in Johannesburg, the institute’s Terry Booysen, noted that NPOs should move away from self-serving because donors will be forced to check how well the organisations have governed themselves.

Call for SA to be Industrialised

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is calling for industrialisation to tackle inequality, unemployment and poverty in South Africa.

COSATU general-secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, argues that, “We have to stop the processes of de-industrialisation. We've got to ensure that the trade relations that are mutually beneficial can ensure industrialisation in South Africa."

Budget Required for NDP Goals

If Trevor Manuel thought the hardest thing about the National Development Plan (NDP) was getting it passed by the African National Congress (ANC) at the party’s Mangaung conference in December 2012, he has another thing coming.

Styli Charalambous, in an article titled, ‘Balancing the budget, NDP-style’, points out that proper implementation is required to achieve the lofty goal of more than doubling the working population by 2030.
