Align Your Work to Development Agenda - SAYC

The South African Youth Council (SAYC) says for the National Lottery Board (NLB) to be developmental, it needs to align its work to South Africa’s national agenda.

Delivering a message of support to the NLB Indaba and Inaugural Awards in Johannesburg, SAYC president, Thulani Tshefuta, whose organisation is the umbrella body of all the youth formations in the country, has described the civil society sector as an economy that creates opportunities for the people.

Call for NPOs to Embrace Good Governance

The Corporate Governance Research Institute has described sustainability as a ‘good component’ of good governance.

Speaking about corporate governance and compliance by nonprofit organisations (NPOs) at the National Lotteries Board Indaba and Inaugural Awards in Johannesburg, the institute’s Terry Booysen, noted that NPOs should move away from self-serving because donors will be forced to check how well the organisations have governed themselves.

Call for ‘Honest’ Applications for Lotto Money

The National Lotteries Board (NLB) has started accepting applications for funding in the arts, culture, and national heritage sector.

In a press statement, NLB CEO, Charlotte Mampane, points out that, "It is critical that in order to ensure success, applicants must prepare their proposals fully and honestly - and early."

Mampane says the NLB is inundated every year with applications from all quarters, many more than it can afford or accommodate, adding that the NLB cannot entertain those that have not been properly put together.

2013 Call for Applications: National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund - Arts, Culture and National Heritage Sector

The Distributing Agency for Arts, Culture and National Heritage, established in terms of the Lotteries Act (No. 57 of 1997), is in a position to consider applications for funding from the proceeds of the National Lottery in a targeted call for applications aligned to regulations published in Government Gazette No. 33398.

2012 Call for Applications: National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund - Charities Sector

The National Lotteries Board (NLB) was established in terms of the Lotteries Act (No 57 of 1997) to regulate the National Lottery as well as other lotteries, including society lotteries to raise funds and promotional competitions.

The Distributing Agency for Charities is once again in the position to consider applications for funding from the proceeds of the National Lottery.

In adjudicating the applications, the Charities Distributing Agency will focus on the following areas:

Draft Lotteries Policy Published for Comment

The Department of Trade and Industry has published a draft lotteries policy following approval by Cabinet. The Lotteries Act regulates lottery activities and provides the basic framework for the management and operation of a National Lottery.

The draft policy proposes interventions to address the challenges identified in the implementation of the Lotteries Act, and as identified by various assessments to improve the performance of the distribution of funds raised by the National Lottery.

NGOs Struggle Due to Lack of Lotto Funding

The National Lotteries Board has not granted funding to about 1 000 struggling charity organisations this year, citing a backlog in the adjudication of requests, which has more than doubled since last year.

This delay has left non-governmental organisations like Childline, the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB), the SA Federation of Mental Health Society in a ‘mess’.

NLDTF Refuses to Take Blame for NGOs Closure

The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) says it cannot be held responsible for the existence of NGOs.

NLDTF spokesperson, Sershan Naidoo, says that the Pinnochio Educare Centre, which was forced to rethink its day care services due to lack of funding, should have made their submission as early as possible to avoid the predicament they find themselves in.

He urged NGOs to, “...look to all sources of funding and should also be telling the media who else they have approached for funding and why they were not successful.”
