AIDS Foundation of South Africa: Programmes Coordinator

The AIDS Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) was established in 1988 and its purpose is to mobilise funding to equip Community Based Organisations (CBOs) and NGOs with financial resources and appropriate skills to implement and manage primary health care and development programmes.

AFSA seeks to appoint a Programmes Coordinator, based in its Grants Department in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The person will be responsible for effective programme management and implementation, grant making, reporting and budget management.

Youth Technology Innovation Fund Launched

The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) has launched the Youth Technology Innovation Fund (YTIF), to give young innovators an opportunity to be the future drivers of South Africa's knowledge economy.

TIA GM of special projects Margaret Mkhosi, notes that, “It is widely accepted, in all areas of industry, that technology innovation is a prerequisite for continued success and sustainable growth and development.”

The fund will build pipeline projects for the TIA sectors and promote a culture of technology innovation among South Africa’s youth, among others.

Devastating Impact of Global Fund Crisis

According to an article Richard Lee, everyone knew that the crisis at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria will have a serious impact across Southern Africa, which is still the epicentre of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Lee, who says that no one knew how serious the crisis will be and/or what will be most affected, notes that new research from Malawi, Swaziland and Zimbabwe highlights how devastating the cancellation of Round 11 funding has been on the HIV and TB response in the region.

US Urged Not to Cut AIDS Funding

South Africa is opposing the United States’ plan to cut at least US$569 million globally from 2013 to President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief’s (PEPFAR) funding.

Deputy President, Kgalema Motlanthe, joined activists and celebrities to urge the US government not to cut funds.

In the same vein, singer and philanthropist, Sir Elton John, has been quoted as saying that, “We have this disease by the scruff of the neck. I beg the senate to maintain its funding over the AIDS epidemic.”

New Extended Credit Facility Arrangement for Malawi

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a new three-year arrangement for Malawi under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

The Board's decision will enable an immediate disbursement equivalent of about US$19.5 million.

The IMF states that the, "…new ECF arrangement provides support for the authorities' medium-term economic program based on Malawi's second Growth and Development Strategy.”

SA Intensifies Fight Against Poaching

The Department of Environmental Affairs has welcomed the R25.2 million it received this month from the Global Environment Facility, to fight rhino poaching.

The department states that the money will be used for, among other things, the ‘enhancement of forensic-based technologies’, including DNA identification of rhino horn.
