27 Reasons to Disagree

Freedom! There is still little to match Mel Gibson on his pony in phoney war paint trying to coax a bunch of underwear-less Scots to freedom from English tyranny…Martin Luther King comes close with his visionary dreams, but Mel has got his number with the flowing locks and big sword[1] – not to mention the adoration of the lovely princess of France, played in that movie by Sophie Marceau…ahh, indeed, that is maybe a blog for another day. Today, I must remain serious for what is our freedom if it is not serious?

Call for Economic Freedom in South Africa

Deputy President, Kgalema Motlanthe, says South Africans cannot claim to be free when they are only enjoying freedom to vote, but not freedom from poverty or the freedom to educate their children and extend effective health services to their families.

Speaking during the 10th Annual Ruth First Memorial Lecture, Montlanthe also stressed the need to grow the economy to address the basic needs of the people.

The deputy president’s comments are a stark reminder of the gallant fighter who would have been a strong opponent of abuse of power and neglect basic human needs.

Freedom for All in South Africa

Despite a plethora of evidence that economically free societies are better off by virtually every measure of wellbeing than societies that are directed and controlled by a central authority, there continues to be significant opposition to ideas of political and economic freedom. Indeed, in the South African context much of the thinking still suffers from a planning paradigm and a persistent insistence that development is in a fundamental sense, up to the government rather than individuals.
