SRC Raises Funds for Needy Students

An ambitious plan of the University of the Witwatersrand Student Representative Council (SRC) to raise R1 million for fellow students' tuition became reality.

This was after an individual donor gave R553 000 to help students from poor families who cannot get funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

Varsities Brace Themselves for More Protests

At the North West University in Mahikeng, some student applications have been rejected due to limited financial aid.
 
The university's financial director, Ettienne Mostert, says 1 656 students that qualify cannot be covered at the moment with the current allocation.
 

NSFAS to Refund Overcharged Students

About 34 000 students who have been overcharged interest on study loans by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) in previous years are to be refunded.

This was revealed by Higher Education and Training Minister, Blade Nzimande, during the announcement of the outcomes of the turnaround strategy implemented to address challenges experienced by the NSFAS.

Nzimande says when the NSFAS recalculated every student loan in its books, it confirmed that it had overcharged interest on some student loans in previous years.

Transformed NSFAS to Benefit Students

The Higher Education and Training Department and National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) board have recommitted to ensuring full compliance with all legislative and regulatory requirements in order to receive clean audits in future.

Higher Education and Training Minister Dr Blade Nzimande says the department and NSFAS board are jointly committed to achieving the rest of its turnaround goals.

Graduates Not Applying for Grant - Report

Not a single graduate has applied for funds from the R200 million government scheme set up to help them settle outstanding university fees, according to a report in the New Age newspaper.

The newspaper says that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), which is tasked with administering the R200 million which is supposed to enable 25 000 students to receive their certificates, said it had not yet received any applications for funding.
