Understanding the Differences Between Civil Society and Civil Society Organisations

Within the South African context there seems to be a lot of confusion about who civil society is and what it means. The term is often used loosely, which just deepens the confusion.

In my opinion though, all of us are civil society. There is a view that business people and politicians are not civil society, but they are. None of us are defined by our work and so within our personal capacity, we all make up the society of South Africa.

MVC: Director

My Vote Counts is a non-profit organisation that works towards improving transparency, accountability and inclusiveness in South Africa’s political and electoral systems. The organisation was formally registered in 2014 and has made an impact in ensuring that South Africans are a step closer to understanding who pays for our politics and focussing on ways in which we can hold our elected representatives to account.

MVC seeks to appoint a Director to be based in Observatory, Cape Town.

SJC March Against State Capture

The Social Justice Coalition marched on Tuesday to demand that Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane oppose any delays to the release of her predecessor's “state capture” report.

The march to the public protector and NPA’s offices in Cape Town was bolstered by other organisations, including housing crisis group Ndifuna Ukwazi.

The marchers demanded that National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Shaun Abrahams resign, and that corruption charges be reinstated against President Jacob Zuma.

The Things That Unite Us

The FW de Klerk Foundation decided to dedicate its second 2 February conference to the theme of the things that unite us as South Africans. In doing so, it is not our intention to pretend that there are not many issues that still divide us - or that South Africa is not faced with enormous challenges and problems. None of us can escape the reality of continuing inequality; massive unemployment; dismal educational performance; service delivery problems, crime and corruption.

Developing a timeline for exit strategies

Many practitioners are struggling with issues including how to approach exit and how to ensure sustainability of interventions. This paper collects and analyses learning from a year-long Action Learning Set on exit with the British Red Cross, EveryChild, Oxfam GB, Sightsavers and WWF-UK. It suggests important factors for practitioners to consider at key stages in the withdrawal process and provides practical examples from each organisation. It also demonstrates how using a timeline approach helped the group to order their thinking on exits.

Advocacy Capacity Building Using Blended Learning in Complex and Fragile Contexts

The International NGO Training and Research Centre and the Dutch Consortium for Rehabilitation (DCR) have worked together to strengthen advocacy capacity within DCR programmes and partners. Drawing on course evaluations and interviews with participants this paper shows how blended learning approaches can provide access to high quality capacity building support in remote and conflict affected locations in a cost-effective way.

Treatment Action Campaign at the Precipice: An Opportune Time for Reflection

A recent petition by researchers, clinicians and activists made on behalf of the Treatment Action Campaign and published in the Mail & Guardian Newspaper, 28 November, 4 December 2014 Edition, The Case for Saving the TAC is Compelling, left me with mixed views on the TAC’s plight as petitioned. The TAC is evidently not unique in its current funding crisis in South Africa.
