NGOs Criticises Department in Parliament

The Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, which stands accused by the Democratic Alliance of poor financial mismanagement and failing to serve their constituency, is criticised for failing to meet their mandate.

Addressing Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Women, Children and People with Disabilities this week, NGOs were of the view that more needs to be done to assist the vast majority of children in the country who remain deprived of basic rights.

Zille Taken to HRC Over Refugee Tweet

A youth activist has complained to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) about Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille's ‘refugee’ comment.

Lukhona Mnguni has asked the SAHRC to ‘advise’ Zille to retract and apologise for her comment on the social networking site Twitter.

Zille referred to Eastern Cape pupils who flocked to the Western Cape for a better education as "refugees" on Twitter.

She tweeted on 20 March 2012: "While ECape education collapsed, WC built 30 schools - 22 new, 8 replacement mainly 4 ECape edu refugees. 26 MORE new schools coming."

Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative: Finance Intern

The Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative (REPSSI) is a nonprofit that works to lessen the devastating social and emotional impact of HIV/AIDS, poverty and conflict among children and youth.

REPSSI seeks to recruit a Finance Intern, based at its Secretariat in Johannesburg.

S/he will provide efficient finance support to the Secretariat in order to ensure an effective operation of all departments at the Secretariat. 

This is a three-month internship.

Children’s Poultry Project Flourishes in Umzimvubu

If you’re never too old to follow your dreams, then you are never too young to get them underway. While some kids are out scraping their knees and playing in dirt, others are dutifully honing their project management and business skills, devising innovative ways to monetise on their ideas all on their own, without any grant from the government. A group of school children in Umzimvubu, Eastern Cape, are proving that long gone are the days when children entrepreneurs were confined to the business of selling sweets and lemonade.

Concern Over Grants Registration Plan

NGOs and advocacy groups are concerned about the Department of Social Development’s announcement that more than 15 million people will have to re-register for social grants in the next year.

But Leonie Caroline, the Western Cape provincial director of the Black Sash, says that, “What the department is proposing is a massive bureaucratic undertaking,” she said. “We feel some people could fall through the cracks.”
