This is a fixed-term contract of six months which may be renewed by mutual agreement.

NGOs Warn Against Ending UK’s Aid

Non-governmental organisations have warned that the United Kingdom’s decision to cut aid to South Africa by R250 million within two years could have a rippling effect.

The Aids Legal Network’s Dr Johanna Kehler, points out that people will no longer have access to antiretroviral drugs and they will be challenges around the prevention of mother to child transmission programmes, adding that all of these things have long term impact.

UK to End Direct Aid to SA - Media Reports

The British government is reportedly planning to stop giving direct aid to South Africa from 2015, according to media reports.

The BBC reported that British international development secretary, Justine Greening, will announce that the United Kingdom's relationship with South Africa will now be based on trade and not development.

The British government's aid programme to South Africa is currently worth R264 million a year. At its peak in 2003, British aid amounted to more than R556 million.

Ogunlesi Explains Significance of Aid

According to Tolu Ogunlesi, every year billions of dollars in development aid stream into sub-Saharan Africa from major donors such as the western countries, multilateral agencies and from Britain’s Department for International Development.
 
In an article titled, ‘Wanted dead or alive: foreign aid in Africa, Ogunlesi states that some countries in Africa depend on these grants and loans more than others.
 

Oxfam Criticises Rich Nations Over Aid

Oxfam has warned that millions of poor people will go without life-saving food and medicines as donor aid pledges to poor countries are breached.

Responding to figures from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) that shows aid from rich countries was US$125.586 billion in 2012 - a real terms fall of US$5.36 billion.

Jeremy Hobbs, executive director of Oxfam International, points out that this cut in aid is going to cost lives since poor countries' reserves have been depleted by the global economic crisis.

Mobile Language Application for Zambia

Peace Corps volunteers, working closely with Zambian software developers, have developed a mobile application that will translate English words and phrases into any of seven languages spoken in Zambia.

The Peace Corps say ‘Bantu Babel’, which is intended to help Peace Corps volunteers, international aid workers and host-country nationals communicate more effectively, is now available for Android-compatible devices in the Google Play store.
