Zim Students Scholarship Suspended

A scholarship set up by Zimbabwe’s President, Robert Mugabe, for Zimbabwean students to study at South African universities has reportedly been suspended after the fund failed to settle its debt of R11 million in tuition fees.

Chris Mushowe, fund director, blamed the situation on former finance minister, Tendai Biti, who he accused of refusing to release funds during his tenure in government.

According to the report, the students currently enrolled through the fund would continue with their studies, although there were claims that they are living in poverty.

60m Needed to Feed Hungry Zimbabweans

The United Nations (UN) is reportedly seeking to raise US$60 million to help feed Zimbabwe’s two million people in need of food assistance.

The country director of the UN World Food Programme in Zimbabwe, Sory Ouane, says the UN has budgeted US$86m for its food assistance programme to June this year.

Ouane says Zimbabwe is becoming a ‘forgotten emergency’ as there are other countries like the Central African Republic and South Sudan also in need of aid assistance.

Aid Agencies Urged to Source Materials Locally

Aid agencies should source development products from local manufacturers to help them make the most of their budgets and improve their impact. This is the view of service providers and manufacturers from Africa.

In a press statement, AidEx - a global humanitarian and development aid event held annually in Brussels - argues that development agencies spend around US$69 billion each year on procuring goods and services from external providers - more than 50 percent of total official development assistance.
