In mid-December 2007, Earthlife Africa Jhb sent a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) request to Eskom regarding the supply of electricity to Alcan’s planned Coega Aluminium Smelter. In particular, Earthlife Africa requested information regarding the price at which Eskom would sell electricity to Alcan, what the conditions of supply were, and if Alcan could sell on unused electricity.

Greenpeace Criticises Rich Nations for Waste Dumping

Greenpeace and other environmental NGOs have criticised wealthy nations for using Africa as their dumping ground for toxic waste generated by the West.

The latest criticism comes as a Dutch-based oil trading company agreed to pay R1, 4 billion to secure the release of three executives from an Ivorian prison in an effort to settle claims related to dumping toxic waste, which claimed the lives of 10 people in Ivory Coast last year.

Kid Lashes Out at Adults for Global Warming

Call for Public Comment on Biofuels Industrial Strategy

Participation Junction, 6 February 2007.

The Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) is inviting comments from stakeholders for the Draft Biofuels Industrial Strategy.
