Call for SABC to Disclose it Plans

Independent TV producers have called on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to make public its transformation plan and proposals for next year’s budget to allow for participation by NGOs, the TV industry and the public.

They say that unless there is participation, by the time the SABC is stabilised there will be no local production houses left in business to provide local content.

Fighting Poverty: Utilising Community Media In a Digital Age

'Fighting Poverty: Utilising Community Media In a Digital Age' focuses on democratic and sustainable development in relation to community media. This publication discusses participation as the main interest of those who support or are active in community radio. It contains articles, audio, and video documents by practitioners, decision makers, and scholars. In addition, it argues that current evidence and experience should prompt a major re-evaluation and increasing interest in community radio by development policymakers and specialists.

The research shared in this report is designed to identify the barriers that limit the potential positive impact of community radio, and to explore ways to increase the effectiveness of community radio in achieving poverty reduction, development objectives, inclusiveness, and democracy building in local communities around the world.

Oh to Live the Life (of a Dali)

Oh to live the life of a Dali
(not the Salvador surrealist one)
fleecing the public broadcaster
another one time over again
he with the sort of usual business
interests outside just in case

Oh to live the life of a Dali
not in a great hurry says he
to go out and find a job
like the some of us

Oh to live the life of a Dali
who apparently did not struggle
to be a peasant lowly or otherwise
at the back of the BEE queue

Oh to live the life of a Dali

Charnley Defends SABC’s Stabilisation Plan

The interim chairwoman of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Irene Charnley, has defended her plan to stabilise the public broadcaster within the next five months.

Charnley says that the plan will not affect the SABC’s ability to meet legislated requirements.

She also hit back at allegations that the public broadcaster, which is not commissioning any new content, is in danger of falling short of its local content requirements.

The training seminar will focus on starting up community radio stations in both these countries. The training will take place at the broadcast studios at the Walter Sisulu University’s media school in East London from the 16 – 21 August 2009.

Public Participation and Transparency Essential in Selecting New SABC Board

The Portfolio Committee on Communications of parliament has, through adverts in a few expensive newspapers targeted at affluent readers, called for nominations for a new board of the public broadcaster the SABC. The closing date for nominations of board members is now 14 August (it was originally 31 July 2009).

Concerns Over Digital Migration

As the government steams ahead, confident that South Africans will start buying decoders in April 2010 in preparation for the country's switch to digital television, there are still concerns about who will foot the bill.

Migrating from analogue to digital means South Africans who do not have digitally complaint television sets will be required to purchase set-top boxes at a cost of R700 in order to view public broadcasting and free-to-air channels.
