Food Security Assessment for Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwean government and NGOs have embarked on an assessment of the food security situation, after initial studies showed that most households will require assistance from around December this year.

Provincial administrator, Felix Chikovo, says that the assessment will give government and its development partners sufficient time to plan for the projected shortages.

ECA Concerned About PAP Construction

The Environment & Conservation Association (ECA) has expressed concern about the “litany of mistakes” that led to the development of the Pan African Parliament on a wetland in Midrand.

ECA chairperson, Nicole Barlow, says that, “A simple look at C-plan 2 and a Google Earth shot would've told any first year student that there was seepage wetland covering most of the site upon wherethey intended to build the parliament.”

NGOs Urged to Fight HIV/AIDS Stigma

The Ghanaian deputy upper regional minister, Lucy Awuni, has underscored the need for NGOs working in the areas of HIV/AIDS to focus more on behavioural change for society to treat people living with HIV/AIDS with compassion and respect.

Speaking during the Ghana AIDS Commission Small Grants Disbursement to Local Partner NGOs in that country, Awuni noted that many people fail to report to health facilities because of the stigma attached to HIV positive people.

Call for More Grants to Alleviate Poverty

The National Working Group on Social Security has called on government to increase the number of people accessing social grants to alleviate poverty.

In its recent submission to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), the coalition’s Isabelle Frye, who is also director at Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute, pointed out that, “President Jacob Zuma acknowledged that social grants remain the main effective form of poverty alleviation.”

NGOs Criticise KZN Social Welfare Budget

Welfare NGOs say the KwaZulu-Natal Social Welfare budget is creating a widening gap between better-paid state social workers and those employed by nonprofit organisations.

Network of Welfare Organisation Directors chairperson, Shelagh Hurford, says the entry level for social workers in NGOs is about R8 270, while social workers employed by the state get about 17 percent more than this plus their occupational-specific dispensation (OSDs). NGOs with only a five percent increase in their subsidies cannot compete.

Corporate Social Entrepreneurship’ discusses the concept of corporate social entrepreneurship (CSE), a process aimed at enabling business to develop more advanced and powerful forms of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The paper argues that CSE is not about managing existing operations or CSR programmes - it is about creating disruptive change in the pursuit of new opportunities. It combines the willingness and desire to create joint economic and social value with the entrepreneurial redesign, systems development, and action necessary to carry it out.

CSO Self-Regulatory Initiatives Database

In response to calls for greater accountability, civil society organisations (CSO) have increasingly been coming together to define common standards of practices and identify to whom and for what they are accountable. The result is a rapid proliferation of self-regulatory initiatives including codes of conduct, codes of ethics, certification schemes, reporting frameworks, working groups, and information services such as directories.

Uganda Debt Network to Govt Over Luxury Vehicles

The Uganda Debt Network, a NGO that advocates for pro-poor policies, has threatened to drag the Ugandan government to court over the purchase of expensive cars for Cabinet ministers.

The Network’s Patrick Tumwebaze points out that, "We want to use the courts of law and demonstrations to send a message to the public that they deserve a responsible government."

Tumwebaze says that the country’s infant mortality rate is at 39 percent, clean is accessed by 54 percent and 40 percent of the budget is foreign-funded.
