How NGOs and Similar Organisations Can Get More for Less

Whether you're a big corporate or a struggling NGO, budgets are getting smaller and tighter everywhere you look. While everyone is trying to get the good work done, administration and marketing tasks often fall by the wayside. This leads to backlogs and many late nights as there are fewer people available to share the workload. This is usually when you try to squeeze the budget and hire a part or full-time assistant to help with these duties. This is not necessarily the only way to go, there are other options for getting more help for less cost.

One excellent option is to engage a freelancer to assist you. As a freelancer, I assist a number of individuals, corporate organisations and NGOs with their administration and marketing. They make use of my services for a set number of hours each month and pay me a retainer for only those hours worked. My aim is to alleviate the pressure while providing a high quality service to my clients.

Hiring a virtual assistant or freelancer has many benefits to cash challenged organisations:
  • A virtual assistant or freelancer works from home, occasionally coming in to your office for meetings if required – this means you are immediately saving money by negating an increase overheads such as electricity, food, additional space and office requirements such as a telephone, a desk, or a computer with licensed software etc.
  • A virtual assistant or freelancer is not a permanent employee of your organisation – you are saving again on additional administrative tasks such as having to register a new employee for tax, medical aid or pension benefits.
  • A virtual assistant or freelancer does not need paid sick leave, maternity leave – you are saving again by only paying for the time that was actually worked and not for those quiet times in your office where you are paying someone to sit and do nothing for hours at a time.
  • A virtual assistant or freelancer is often multi-talented – skilled in more than one area, with experience of many years – you are saving again as you are hiring a highly skilled individual who can assist you in a wide variety of ways on an hourly basis without the high costs of employing a highly skilled individual in a full-time capacity

These are just some of the benefits to hiring a virtual assistant or freelancer. It is an excellent opportunity for NGOs and similar organisations to get the help they need on a regular basis for a fraction of the cost of hiring permanent staff.
