Congrats to the IEC

I went to vote this morning in our national elections, and I want to congratulate the IEC on how they have co-ordianted the elections. Their staff were efficient, polite and highly effective. Nice to have such a positive experience on voting day. Hats off to you IEC.

Sangonet Visits Durban

Today I attended the Sangonet presentation at Diakonia Centre (Durban). It was so great to meet all the people who make this all happen. I met the people who have helped the trust I direct, with the latest software at incredibly affordable prices. This is something invaluable to myself, and so many other under resourced NPO's. I also me the people, who when I have an issue, allow me to blog, publish my opinions, and are also available to me, when I need a sound opinion, on an issue, I am dealing with, in my capacity as Director.

Becoming Self Sustaining

A thought occurred to me the other day as regards the whole debate about NGO's becoming self sustaining. With the non-profit that I run, when I recruited/brought on board the people who currently work with us, they were brought into the organization, as they fulfilled the brief and mandate of an NGO (in our case including special needs, ex-street children etc).

The silence that is killing Zimbabweans

I worry a great deal at the moment, as I watch the rest of humanity calling for Mugabe to step down, or be removed from power, and on the other hand I see the Southern African leaders calling for 'dialogue' and essentially supporting this despot. One has to wonder what hold Mugabe has over the powers that be in Africa? This cannot be simply about race ( a black African leader being supported by other black African leaders). One hears rumours flying about that Mugabe is linked to all the other Southern African leaders through their business dealings and interests.

To ICT or not to ICT?

I often sit in on meetings and presentations, where people talk of ICT's, and how they will transform the work that we do, and how we do it. What worries me is that we never follow this debate through to its conclusion, and look at the truth of this all. ICT's are amazingly powerful, and can take NGO's and their work to new and exciting places. I do think that we fail to acknowledge that these ICT's can and will only take what is there (on a day-to-day basis) and magnify it. If you are a disorganized shambles, you will be an even bigger one in cyberspace, and the opposite is true as well.
